What's the story? - Dorset’s famous lost village, Tyneham on the Isle of Purbeck has an obvious attraction to an artist. In December 1943 225 residents left their homes as the village had been requisitioned as a military training area to prepare troops for D-day and the Battle of Normandy that followed. The villagers never returned and the derelict cottages, skeletal appearance, jagged roofless walls and sculptural forms of the trees, nestled in its valley so close to the sea make this a simply beautiful setting. So far this is the only wintry scene Richard has painted and depicts beautifully the way the village has remained frozen in time for the last 60 years.
Artist Richard Watkin paints the evocative locations and landscapes of Dorset from the beaches and towns of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch to the dramatic Jurassic Coastline and picturesque Purbeck villages. He paints with acrylics in a bold graphical style, his travel print collection evokes a sense of nostalgia, a time when the pace of life was slower and the sun was always shinning!
